The Economy of the Animal Kingdom (Clissold translation)

This is a translation of: Oeconomia regni animalis, by Swedenborg, Emanuel

Translated into English

Description:

This extensive work was published anonymously by Swedenborg in two volumes, in 1740-41, in Amsterdam. The traditional English title's translation is misleading, since "de anima humana" means the human soul. In this work, Swedenborg is considering where and how the human soul has its "seat" in the human body, and how it operates (its economy). He considers first the heart and the circulatory system, and then the brain and the nervous system. One suggested translation for the title has been "Dynamics of the Soul's Domain".

About this translation:

This extensive work was published anonymously by Swedenborg in two Latin volumes, in 1740-41, in Amsterdam. The traditional English translated title has been misleading, since "Oeconomia" has been translated "Economy" instead of something like "operationa", or "activities", and "animalis" has been translated as animal, when Swedenborg was really describing the soul, or the essential source of animation, or life. In this work, Swedenborg is considering where and how the human soul has its "seat" in the human body, and how it operates (its economy). He considers first the heart and the circulatory system, and then the brain and the nervous system. Dr. Jonathan S. Rose has suggested that a better translation for the title is "Dynamics of the Soul's Domain".
